August 4, 2015

Wowza, Ghoul Friends!

Y’all wrote some amazing responses to this Shapeshifting 13 prompt, you wicked writers working your wonderful words, you!

From the spine-tingling to the heart-warming to the heart-breaking, this week gave us a wide array of characters and events. I am so proud of each and every one of you! Give yourselves a big round of applause!!

Even if you’ve got a few people giving you some funny looks while you applaud at work or at the coffee shop, embrace it! You’re fabulous!

I just want to say thank you, everyone, for embracing my first challenge! It was really fun! I look forward to our future challenges together, and I’ve got some frightening juicy ideas in store for you! MWAHAHAHA!!!

Let’s give a big warm, ghoulish welcome to Sue Archer who is handling our Boot Camp. Missus Archer also writes the Grammar Corner in The Ghoul’s Review! It’s wonderful having you with us, Sue!

So, before I announce our winners, I want to take a moment to remind you of a few things:

  1. Our first-ever Fall Short Story Contest is currently accepting submissions through Friday, September 13th at Midnight, Eastern Time, and I highly encourage you to consider submitting. The winner will receive $100 and be published in our fall issue of The Ghoul’s Review.
  2. The Mutant 750 #45 Kickoff is up and available for your submission. We’ve got a couple of wonderfully inspiring prompts up for you over there. Consider giving it a look and submit your best in 750 words or less!
  3. Our Lair is always open for your lurking pleasure! This past Saturday, we started discussing Book Talks and Book Discussions, and how you prefer to respond to what you’ve read. I’d love to hear from you regarding this! If you’re new here, consider telling us a little about yourself in our Introductions forum. Also, if you’ve read a good book lately, and you think even one of us may enjoy it, too, considering sharing it in our Book Club forum. I try to get a new post up every Wednesday and Saturday, and we have many others for you to join. Let your voice be heard!
  4. The Shapeshifting 13 fires up every Friday at Noon ET. The grid will stay open until Sunday at 8:00 p.m., after which voting will open. Voting ends on Monday at 8:00 p.m., so you get about 24 hours to read and vote for your favorites pieces. Winners will be announced in a separate post on Tuesday at Noon ET. Further details can be found here.

Alright-roo! Let’s get to the winners, shall we?! The winners of the Shapeshifting 13 Challenge #12 are:

1st: Aishmaraghu of Not Quite Through the Looking Glass with her spine-tingling tale NEVER ON THE FIRST, a story about that horrifying moment when someone’s “leaning in for a kiss”. Spectacular writing, dearie! Grab that well-earned winner’s badge to the right!

2nd: Paz Spera of The Paz Spera Experience with her story Rust, a story where the narrator talks herself through the possibility of survival on the machine, and leaves us readers wondering what happened next. Superb work!

3rd: WE HAVE A TIE! Obeseelephant of The Musings of an ObeseElephant with his piece To Love and Be Loved, a stunning poetic piece of understanding and acceptance. And Anusha of Some Thoughts, Many Words with her piece Reminiscence (with some funnel cakes), a story of longing after the protagonist has made the perfect batch of funnel cakes.

Congratulations, to your winners!!

And a big “job well done” to everyone who submitted this week! Another big round of applause for each of you! That was some amazing writing, y’all! Make sure to check in on Friday for the Shapeshifting 13 Challenge #13 where your word limit will be 13!! (Isn’t that your favorite number?!)

Until then, au revoir, and SHARE THE GEEKDOM!
